THE ACORN TREE

REMEMBER, IF YOU'VE LIVED....YOU'VE LEARNED!  SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
The Acorn Tree hopes to bring attention to our endangered, or near endangered species, plant or animal. No voice is too small to be heard.
Well, here I am again, back from another safari!  Late as always, but definitely not empty-handed because I have so very much to share with you!
Africa was my destination, home to beautiful tropical rain forests, Savannah grasslands, lush farmland, vast deserts and mountains permanently peaked with snow.
Africa, having 53 countries, is the second largest continent, covering about one fifth of the entire land surface of the Earth.  Divided nearly in half by the equator, Africa is diverse, rich in culture, and unique in it's abundance of natural resources.
The Nile River, one of Africa's many rivers, is a 4100 mile long winding river which travels from mountain, across desert, through swampland, and finally drains into the Mediterranean Sea.  Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake, and the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It is home to over 200 species of fish.
African soil contains some of the largest reserves of fossil fuels, metallic ores, gems and precious metals. More than 50% of the worlds diamonds and gold are found here.

Africa has spectacular wildlife reserves and parks, dedicated to the preservation of wildlife, as well as many smaller nature areas and sanctuaries.  Africa's wildlife includes Bovids, Herbivores, Carnivores, and Primates.
Bovids are hoofed, cud-chewing mammals.  These include the antelope, bison, buffalo, cattle, sheep and giraffe.  They live mostly in grasslands, scrublands, or deserts, but some may be found in the more mountainous regions, forests, or swamps.

Herbivores are animals which live solely on plant tissue.  They range from insects like aphids to large mammals like elephants.  African herbivores include animals like the warthog, hippopotamus, zebra, rhino and elephant.
Carnivore means  "meat eater".  This group includes dogs, jackals, and bears.  African carnivores are animals like the tiger, lion, and cheetah.

Primates are mammals categorized into two groups.  The first is the prosimians, which include the lemurs, lorises and tarsiers.  The second is the anthropoids, which include monkeys, apes, and man
